1、suppose 意為“認為,猜測”,後常接“賓語+賓語補足語”形式。suppose sb./sth. to have done 的結構。
例如:
They supposed the paper to have been lost during the war. 他們認為那個文件在戰爭期間丟失了。
The police arrested him because he was supposed to have killed the lady. 警察逮捕了他,認為他殺死了那位女士。
2、suppose 可用於“ be supposed +不定式”的結構。
be supposed to do sth. = should do sth. 意為“應該 / 理應做某事”,表示被期望或被要求(按規則、慣例)做某事。
例如:
We are supposed to help each other. 我們理應互相幫助。(要求)
You are supposed to hand in your papers before class is over. 希望妳下課前交卷子。(期望)
3、suppose 可用過去完成時表示“未曾實現的願望”。
例如:
We had supposed that we would be able to see more of Shanghai, but time didn't permit. 我們本打算能多看看上海,但時間卻不允許了。
註意:與 suppose 這種用法相同的還有: hope, think, expect, mean, want, intend, plan (壹些表示心理狀態的動詞)等。
4、suppose 可用於“ suppose + that (從句)”句型。
例如:
What makes you suppose (that) I'm against it? 妳根據什麽認為我反對這件事?
It was generally supposed that it would not happen again. 壹般認為此事不會再發生。
5、suppose 可用於簡略答語中,用 so 代替壹個肯定的賓語從句;用 not 代替壹個否定的賓語從句。
Do you suppose he'll fail to catch the train?妳認為他會錯過火車嗎?
I suppose so./ I suppose not. (= I don't suppose so. )我想會的。 / 我想不會。
註意:與 suppose 這種用法相同的還有: think, believe, expect, imagine 等。但應註意 hope 和 be afraid 則不同於以上的用法。
