ratherthan後面的動詞可以是ing形式，也可以是省略to的不定式形式，即ratherthandoing或ratherthan（to）do。ratherthan前後的動詞形式要保持壹致。do的現在分詞；可以說ratherthan即是介詞又是連詞。如果我們把它當介詞看，近似於“inplaceof”或者“insteadof”，那麽碰到後面加動詞時，我們可以壹律把它們變成動名詞，比如：Ratherthangoingout，hestayedhome.如果把ratherthan看作連詞，它就類似於“andnot”，那麽壹般情況下ratherthan前後要保持平行，比如：Ichosetostayhomeratherthan（to）goout.這句話中的兩個動詞短語（stayhome和goout）在語法上平行。
