(1) To transfer sets of data, such as files or computer programs of various sizes , from main storage to auxiliary storage for the purpose of freeing main storage for another use.

(2) In Series/1， to transfer a task set out of a partition and replace the task set with a task set of higher queue priority . No subsequent roll out will occur until a roll in restores the partition. The shared task set may not be rolled out.
