來自中古法語esquier,鄉紳，來自古法語escuier,持盾者，來自（縮寫自）拉丁語scutarius,持盾者，來自scutum,盾，來自PIE*skei,分開，劈開，詞源同shield,scuttle,escudo。
原指騎士的學徒或實習騎士，兼幫師傅持盾或跑腿，後用於對人的尊稱（低於騎士），如鄉紳，地主，同時也用於對男性的尊稱。
