allow的多種用法：
1、allow作“允許”或“許可”講，常搭用動詞不定式短語作賓語補足語即，allow sb.to do sth.允許某人做某事。
①We were allowed to smoke in this room only.
我們只許在這間屋子裏抽煙。
②Please allow me to carry your bag.
請讓我替妳拿包。
③My boss doesn't allow me to use the telephone.
我的老板不允許我用電話。
2、allow 作“許可”，“允許”講，只可搭配動名詞短語作賓語，不可直接搭用動詞不定式作賓補，即只可說 allow doing sth，不可說allow to do sth。
①Smoking is not allowed here.
此處禁止吸煙。
②They allowed smoking in this room only.
他們只允許在這間屋子裏抽煙。
3、allow還常與 out，in，up等副詞搭配使用，即 allow sb.in/out/up等。
①She won't allow the children in until they've wiped their shoes.
直到孩子們把鞋擦幹凈，她才讓他們進來。
②She is not allowed out after dark.
天黑後，不準她出去。
③The patient was allowed up after ten days.
十天後病人才被允許起床。
