2. 表示“費心”“費力”，多用於否定句和疑問句；若表示費心做某事，表示通常其後接動詞時，通常用不定式。如：
He didn’t bother (=trouble) to answer personally. 他嫌麻煩不願親自回答。
Why bother to write? We’ll see him tomorrow. 還寫信幹什麽? 我們明天就見到他了。
在現代英語中，bother 後也可跟動名詞。如：
Don’t bother to lock [locking] the door. 別費事鎖門了。
He won’t come, so why bother inviting him? 他不會來的，為什麽還要費心請他呢?
有時後接 about doing sth 也可表示類似意思。如：
You needn’t bother to come up [about coming up]. 妳不必費心來了。
3. 在口語中說 don’t bother(…), 主要用於謝絕對方主動提出的善意幫助，意為“不用費心（……）了”“不用麻煩（……）了”。如：
A：Shall I help you with the washing up? 要不要我幫妳洗碗碟?
B：Don’t bother. I’ll do it later. 不必麻煩了，我等壹會再洗。
Don’t bother to come to the door with me. I can see myself out. 不用費力送我出去。我可以自己出去。
另外，口語中還說I’m not bothered，其意為“我無所謂”。如：
I’m not bothered whether we go out or stay in. 出去還是待在家裏，我無所謂。
4. 慣用句式can’t be bothered (to do sth) 的意思是“嫌麻煩而不做某事”“偷懶”。如：
The grass needs cutting but I can’t be bothered to do it today. 草得剪壹剪了，但我今天卻懶得去做。
