《If I Were a Boy》由托比·蓋德和BC·簡***同創作，其靈感來源於BC·簡她本人所認為是真心且艱難的壹段戀情。在創作過程中，BC·簡花費十五分鐘完成該歌曲的旋律及歌詞，並和托比·蓋德壹起花費壹小時三十分鐘完成整首曲子。歌詞的創作方式是每當BC·簡說過什麽有趣的言論後，托比·蓋德就拿出錄音機把她的話錄下來，並寫入歌曲中。
