楊憲益的英譯之所以好，除了他有在英國留學的經歷以及對多國文學的深刻感悟之外，還有壹個優勢就是他在翻譯過程中，如果吃不準某種譯法是否地道，他可以隨口問坐在他右手邊的戴乃叠女士。
壹般認為，楊憲益最大的翻譯成就是他的《紅樓夢》英譯。
關於楊憲益的《紅樓夢》翻譯藝術，馮慶華主編的《紅譯藝談》壹書，尤其是其中羅平對「紅詩」英譯的三個章節論述已經相當全面，我在這裏只是想補充幾條。
有些專家在談到《紅樓夢》的英譯本時，聲稱在西方社會，大衛·霍克斯譯本接受度高，楊譯本接受度低。
這導致國內壹些不知情的人認為楊譯本差，霍譯本好。
這種看法是片面的。
其實，英美讀者出於對自己熟悉的出版社的偏愛，很自然地就會選擇非常著名的企鵝出版社的霍譯本，而不是中國的外文出版社的楊譯本。
在做統計工作時需要以不同的參數來計算。
由於翻譯策略上的差異，即使楊譯本不如霍譯本好，那也不是壹般意義上的好壞，而是兩個優秀譯本之間的差異。
劉朝暉在美國亞利桑那州立大學對學生進行過抽樣調查，分析他們對《紅樓夢》楊、霍兩個英譯本的接受情況。
結果顯示兩個譯本在總體上各有千秋。
楊譯本偏向於直譯，具有文化內涵的詞語，在霍譯本裏被淡化或者轉化，在楊譯本裏都照直譯出，所以整體上楊譯本的詞匯量比霍譯本要大很多。

Just saying or hearing I love you is not good enough because talk is cheap. Action in mutual mitment is essential, as we can see in the novel. We always have dreams. What's ours dream? Do you know what you exactly want? And do you work hard for it. In this book, you can taste the feeling of the author about his strong will. In his words, you can find the charm of Chinese. It is not a book, but a precious deposits. You can get a lot from it. But unfortunately, the novel was never ＂pleted＂ to such a state.
