utmost是不是表示極限的程度比extreme高？

二者都具備兩種詞性：形容詞和名詞。下面分別就這兩種詞性情況來考察壹下這兩個詞：1.在作形容詞的時候，utmost的意思是greatest; furthest; most extreme，即最大的; 最遠的; 極度的，例如：in the utmost danger 在極端的危險中，of the utmost importance 極重要的，with the utmost care 極其小心。extreme也有類似的意思，表示程度或強度最高的; 最大可能的; 極度的，例如：show extreme patience, kindness, gentleness, etc 表現出極為耐心﹑ 和藹﹑ 溫柔等。而此二者作形容詞時候的區別就在於，extreme壹詞除了有以上意思外，還有壹個utmost所沒有的意思：(of people and their opinions) far from moderate， 即（指人和意見）偏激的, 極端的，是壹種貶義的用法，例如：hold extreme views 持偏激觀點2.在作名詞的時候，utmost的意思是the greatest, furthest or most extreme degree or point, etcthat is possible，即最大限度; 極限，例如：enjoy oneself to the utmost 盡情享樂。extreme也有類似的意思，表示greatest or highest degree; either end of anything，即最大程度; 最高程度; 極端，例如： He could not tolerate the extremes of heat in the desert. 他忍受不住沙漠的酷熱。若要說此二者作名詞時候的最大差別，在於extreme是壹個可數名詞，在句中壹般以extremes的復數形式出現；而utmost盡管也是可數名詞，但在句中通常只能用單數，以the utmost的形式出現。
