有壹年，天大旱。火壹樣的太陽烤焦了地上的莊稼，曬幹了河裏的流水。人們熱得難受，實在無法生活。誇父見到這種情景，就立下雄心壯誌，發誓要把太陽捉住，讓它聽從人們的吩咐，更好地為大家服務。
壹天，太陽剛剛從海上升起，誇父就從東海邊上邁開大步開始了他逐日的征程。

誇父依然不氣餒，他鼓足全身的力氣，又準備出發了。可是離太陽越近，太陽光就越強烈，誇父越來越感到焦躁難耐，他覺得他渾身的水分都被蒸幹了，當務之急，他需要喝大量的水。於是，誇父站起來走到東南方的黃河邊，伏下身子，猛喝黃河裏的水，黃河水被他喝幹了，他又去喝渭河裏的水。誰知道，他喝幹了渭河水，還是不解渴。於是，他打算向北走，去喝壹個大澤的水。可是，誇父實在太累太渴了，當他走到中途時，身體就再也支持不住了，慢慢地倒下去，死了。
誇父死後，他的身體變成了壹座大山。這就是“誇父山”，據說，位於現在河南省靈寶縣西三十五裏靈湖峪和池峪中間。誇父死時扔下的手杖，也變成了壹片五彩雲霞壹樣的桃林。桃林的地勢險要，後人把這裏叫做“桃林寨”。
