 1、can、be able to與manage to

 本課與第43課的內容差不多,主要對比can、be able to和manage to的用法。其中,can強調的是某人具備做某事的能力,be able to強調擅長做某事,而manage to強調的是成功做成某事。比如:

 He could not get into the town this morning.

 They were able to arrive in London after a long journey of 21 hours.

 He managed to leave Europe before the war began.

 2、say和tell的短語

 本課的難點部分出現了有關say和tell的常見短語的用法。如:say sth. to sb., say one's prayer, say a good word for sb., say goodbye to sb., say no more about sth.; tell sb. about sth., tell sb. a story, tell the time, tell sb. the truth, tell sb. a secret, tell the difference between...and...

 動名詞

 與第20課和第44課不同的是,本課側重的是動名詞的所有格以及動名詞與現在分詞的區別。如:Would you mind my opening the window? / I saw him coming. / Let's go shopping.

 課文主要語言點

 I crossed the street to avoid meeting him, but he saw me and came running towards me. 1)cross the street,穿過街道。 2)avoid doing,避免做某事。 3)came running towards me,朝我跑來。註意running不是動名詞,而是現在分詞,用作came的伴隨狀語。

 It was no use pretending that I had not seen him, so I waved to him. 1)It is no use doing...,做某事是沒有的。 2)pretend,假裝。 3)wave to sb.,向某人招手。

 I never enjoy meeting Nigel Dykes. He never has anything to do. 1)enjoy doing,喜歡做某事。 2)have something to do,有事要做。

 No matter how busy you are, he always insists on coming with you. 1)no matter how,無論多麽。相當於however,引導的是壹種讓步狀語從句。 2)insist on,堅持。 3)come with sb.,和某人壹道來。

 Would you mind my coming with you?' he asked before I had finished speaking. 1)註意my opening的動名詞所有格的用法。壹般是在doing前加物主代詞,表示動作的執行者是誰。 2)before I had finished speaking,在我還沒來得及把話說完之前。

 There's always plenty to read in the waiting room. 註意句中的plenty用作副詞,相當於much。

 被動語態

 本課側重的是從句中的被動語態改為分詞短語的用法。如:After he was arrested, the man confessed that he had stolen the money.句中after從句中的被動結構he was arrested可以改為being arrested,因為主從句的主語是壹致的。

 課文主要語言點

 I was being tested for a driving licence for the third time. 1)句中的test用了過去進行時,旨在交代整個故事發生的時候我正在幹什麽。 2)a driving licence,駕照。 3)for the third time,第三次。註意跟for a third time(又壹次)的區別。

 I had been asked to drive in heavy traffic and had done so successfully. 1)註意本句and前後的謂語動詞ask和do之所以采用過去完成時,是因為這兩個動作都是發生過去的過去。 2)heavy traffic,交通擁擠。 3)successfully,成功地。源自動詞succeed(成功做成),其名詞為success(成功),形容詞為successful(成功的)。

 After having been instructed to drive out of town, I began to acquire confidence. 1)註意after從句中的被動結構原本是個句子,即:after I had been instructed to drive out of town。之所以能夠改為短語,是因為主從句的主語是壹致的。 2)instruct,指導、指示。 3)acquire confidence,獲得信心、感到自信。acquire,獲得。confidence,信心;其形容詞為confident(自信的)。

 Sure that I had passed, I was almost beginning to enjoy my test. 1)註意句中的sure that...其實是從句改為短語結構的用法,其原形可理解為:Because I was sure that...。 2)註意當begin用於進行時態時,後面通常只接動詞不定式,而不用動名詞。

 The examiner must have been pleased with my performance, for he smiled and said... 1)examiner,主考官。源自動詞examine(檢查;考試),其名詞形式為examination,通常縮略為exam。 2)be pleased with,對...感到滿意。 3)performance,成績、表現。源自動詞perform(表演、執行)。 4)註意for引導的是表原因的並列句,起著補充說明的作用。
