鳴槍的前身是鳴放禮炮。
鳴放禮炮起源於英國。據說400多年前英國海軍用的是火炮。當戰艦進入友好國家的港口之前，或在公海上與友好國家的艦船相遇時，為了表示沒有敵意，便把船上大炮內的炮彈統統放掉，對方的海岸炮艦船也同樣做以表示回報。這種做法以後就逐漸成為互致敬意的壹種禮儀。由於當時最大的戰艦裝有大炮21門，所以鳴炮 21響就成了壹種最高禮節。 21這個數字可能是因為古代英國人認為7的倍數是吉利的，而且英國海軍還有壹個迷信認為雙數是不吉利的。
在陸軍戰場上，交戰雙方停戰以便雙方收拾自己的陣亡者和傷員時，也會大炮齊鳴呼喚戰友重新投入戰鬥。這也是以鳴炮或鳴槍紀念陣亡將士的由來。而歌曲描寫的就是在鳴槍紀念陣亡士兵的過程中的感受和思緒
