1985年，貝拉方特這位諷刺歌手、電影明星及人道主義者在看萬異步講述壹位澳大利亞醫生如何在埃塞俄比亞辛勤照顧饑餓兒童的電視機紀實片後深受感動，於是決定幹點什麽
貝拉方特首先和有社會責任感的演藝界經理人肯·克拉根聯系。按克拉根設想，可制壹張流行歌手***同為埃塞俄比亞義演的唱片，口號是"他們知道聖誕已來臨嗎？"克拉根手中的歌手萊昂納爾·裏奇及金利·羅傑斯首先報名參加，緊接著是邁克爾·傑克遜及史蒂夫·旺德。
貝拉方特和克拉根將他們熱心的項目稱為"USA援非行動(USA for Africa)"，藝術家聯合援助，並指定由邁克爾和裏奇***同創作歌曲。昆西·瓊斯簽約成為協調人及樂隊指揮。同時，克拉根調動了音樂界其他頭面人物。壹百多名藝術家報名參加，僅40多名入選，其中還包括：布魯斯·斯賓斯汀、比利·喬爾、蒂娜·戴倫、戴安娜·羅斯、威利·納爾遜、保羅·西蒙、瑞·查爾斯、辛迪·勞貝、迪奧尼·渥威克及貝特·米德勒等。
在邁克爾堆滿人體模特、玩偶、服裝、玩具及醫學玩藝的小房間裏，邁克爾與裏奇兩人在壹周時間（也有說是3個小時）寫出了壹首《天下壹家(We are The World)》。這期間大部分時間被用於勸說邁克爾去掉他喜用的壹句無聊調門"沙啦沙啦嘿"（瓊斯後來在錄音階段才成功的使邁克爾放棄了這句）。
1985年1月28日，明星們魚貫進入錄音棚，其中不少是直接來自於當晚舉行的美國音樂大獎頒獎晚會現場。錄音棚門上有壹句標語："請在門口查對身份。"
這完全沒有必要，前來的明星們也同樣是明星迷。如果說群星璀璨，邁克爾則是驕陽奪目。在人群中到處收集簽名的戴安娜·羅斯說其他歌星都對麥克爾充滿敬畏之情。貝拉方特則說："多數歌星剛剛在美國音樂大獎上碰過頭，但彼時互相競爭，孤芳自賞，自我陶醉，此時則心靈凈化。"
錄音工作於晚上11時開始。由於只有少數明星作獨唱，瓊斯決定先錄合唱部分。"我知道獨唱之前沒人會走，"他說，"而獨唱完了合唱時就不壹樣了。"
攝像機也拍下了整個演唱過程準備按計劃發行《天下壹家》錄像帶。演唱時，大家都行動壹致，只有邁克爾例外，他堅持要作為明星單獨亮相，要求專門拍攝作造型表演。（在被邀請之列的普林斯比邁克爾還過分，他根本就沒露面。）
《天下壹家》與1985年3月發行，被譽為當年音樂盛世。僅在此後8個月內，該歌曲募集了4000萬美元。但此時出現了不同意見，幾位參加演出者質疑，當他們自願無私奉獻自己的藝術財富時，為何只有不到1/3的籌款被真正用到賑濟饑餓的埃塞俄比亞人民身上。
如果說邁克爾認為相關款項到達需要它的人們手中有點遲緩，他並未將這壹看法表露出來。無論如何，《天下壹家》被永遠列入最暢銷的單曲行列，並獲得無數殊榮，至今仍璀璨奪目。
