格式規範
推薦人應以該校或該公司擡頭的信紙及信封來撰寫信件，中文擡頭的信紙及信封亦可，如果真的沒有任何信紙及信封，可請推薦人附上名片並在推薦函上蓋上學校章或公司章（不過有些學校還是要有擡頭的信紙及信封）。
寫作內容
1、推薦人由下列各方面表達其對申請人的學業能力之看法
a、以往的學業成就，包含考試成績

c、學術潛力，例如日後考試成績之推斷
2、推薦人應就其所知之申請人能力表現，興趣及人格給予評論，此應包括
a、英文說寫能力
b、分析表達能力
c、個人特質，如進取心、獨立性、自我激勵、果斷力等
d、創造力、想像力
e、可靠性及責任感（請就所了解的程度說明申請人所負責之職務）
f、興趣之廣泛性、包括參與活動和社會組織

4、申請人修完其課業後的生涯展望
如果是離校很久之成人申請者，推薦人可能很難就其學術能力給予評論。此時，可能提供申請個人能力與自我激勵能力的看法，且說明其認為申請者可能應付學位課程的理由，其工作經歷及推薦人對申請者之工作績效也應包括在內。
