1984年，英國歌手菲爾·科林斯和鮑勃·格爾多夫召集了十余位歌手錄制了歌曲《Do they know it's Christmas》，為非洲饑民籌集了許多善款。
人民挨餓的消息同時也震驚了邁克爾· 傑克遜和萊昂內爾·裏奇，兩人認為自己該做點什麽。於是他們合寫了這首歌曲。兩人費了四天的時間寫作曲，裏奇先完成壹部分，傑克遜看到後靈感大發，壹夜之間就把全曲寫好。
1985年1月28日，全美音樂獎頒獎典禮結束後，邁克爾傑克遜號召45位歌手來到位於洛杉磯的A&M錄音室，花了壹晚上時間錄制出了《We Are The World》。
