旁白：從前有位國王，他有個獨生兒子，若掌上明珠，可是王子總是悶悶不了，每天在窗前呆望天空。
Aside: A king had an only son that he thought the world of. But this prince was always unhappy. He would spend days on end at his window staring into space.
國王：哎呀，妳到底缺什麽呢？哪兒不稱心呢？
King: Oh, What on earth do you lack? What's wrong with you?"
王子：爸爸，我自己也搞不清楚。
Prince: I don't even know myself, Father."
國王：哦！妳戀愛啦！哎呀，如果妳喜歡哪個姑娘，告訴我，我會為妳操辦的，讓妳跟她結婚，無論是哪個最強大的國家公主，還是世上最貧寒的農家姑娘，我都可以辦的到。
King: Are you in love? If there's a particular girl you fancy, tell me, and I'll arrange for you to marry her, no matter whether she's the daughter of the most powerful king on earth or the poorest peasant girl alive!
王子：不，爸爸，我沒在戀愛。
Prince: No, Father, I'm not in love.
旁白：國王千方百計地想使兒子快樂起來，可無濟於事，王子的臉龐失去了往日光彩，國王發布了昭示板，於是壹些最有學問的哲學家，博士，教授，從世界各地紛紛到來，國王讓他們看了王子，並征詢他們的意見，這些聰明的學者思考了壹陣後，回來見國王說.
Aside: The king tried in every way imaginable to cheer him up, but day by day the rosy hue drained from the prince's face. The king issued a decree, and from every corner of the earth came the most learned philosophers, doctors, and professors. The king showed them the prince and asked for their advice. wise men withdrew to think, and then returned to the king.
學者甲：嗯，殿下，我們仔細地考慮了王子得 情況，還研究了星象，我們認為妳必須做這樣壹件事，找個幸福的人，壹個完全幸福得人，把您得兒子的襯衣和他的襯衣調換壹下。

旁白：當天國王就派出大使，到世界各地去尋找幸福的人。壹個神父被招來件國王。
Aside: That same day the king sent ambassadors to all parts of the world in search of the happy man. A priest was taken to the king.
國王：妳幸福嗎 ？
King: Are you happy?"
神父：是的，我確實很幸福，陛下。
Priest: Yes, indeed, Majesty.
國王：很好，妳做我的主教怎麽樣？
King: Fine. How would you like to be my bishop?
神父：啊！陛下，我求之不得啊！
Priest: Oh, Majesty, if only it were so!"
國王：滾，給我滾得遠遠得 ，我要找得是自身感到幸福的人，而不是總想得寸進尺的人。
King: Away with you! Get out of my sight! I'm seeking a man who's happy just as he is, not one who's trying to better his lot.
旁白：於是，又重新開始搜尋，不久，國王聽說有位鄰國國王，人們都說他是個真正幸福的人，他有個賢惠美麗的妻子，而且子孫滿堂，他制服了所有的人，國家康泰安寧。於是，國家又有了希望，馬上派使臣去件他，想向他要壹件襯衣，鄰國國王接見使臣們說：
Aside: Thus the search resumed, and before long the king was told about a neighboring king, who everybody said was a truly happy man. He had a wife as good as she was beautiful and a whole slew of children. He had conquered all his enemies, and his country was at peace. Again hopefully, the king immediately sent ambassadors to him to ask for his shirt. The neighboring king received the ambassadors and said”
鄰國國王：不錯，凡是人們想要的東西，我的確都有了，不過我仍然滿腹憂愁啊！因為總有壹天，我不得不扔不下在壹切，離開人世，哎啊 ，為這事，我晚上連覺也睡不著呢！
Neighboring king: Yes, indeed, I have everything anybody could possibly want. But at the same time I worry because I'll have to die one day and leave it all. I can't sleep at night for worrying about that!
旁白：使臣們想，還是別帶回這個國王的襯衣為妙。國王沒辦法，便去打獵散心，他開槍打中了壹只野兔，但只是傷了它，野兔帶著三條腿奔跑著，國王追趕著野兔把隨從們遠遠地拋在後面，在森林外的曠野裏，國王聽到有人在唱歌，他便收住腳步。
Aside: The ambassadors thought it wiser to go home without this man's shirt.
At his wit's end, the king went hunting. He fired at a hare but only wounded it, and the hare scampered away on three legs. The king pursued it, leaving the hunting party far behind him. 0ut in the open field he heard a man singing a refrain. The king stopped in his tracks.
國王：這位唱歌的人，壹定是位幸福的人。
King: Whoever sings like that is bound to be happy!
旁白：歌聲把他引到壹座葡萄園，在那，他發現壹個小夥子，在修剪著壹個葡萄藤
Aside: The song led him into a vineyard, where he found a young man singing and pruning the vines.
小夥子：您好啊，陛下。這麽早，您就到鄉下來了。
The youth:Good day, Majesty, So early and already out in the country?
國王：天哪，妳願意我把妳帶到京都去嗎？妳將成為我的朋友。
King: Bless you! Would you like me to take you to the capital? You will be my friend.
小夥子：多謝您了，陛下。這種事，我根本不想。即使羅馬教皇與我換個位子，我也不幹。
The youth: Much obliged, Majesty, but I wouldn't even consider it. I wouldn't even change places with the Pope.
國王：為什麽呢？像妳這樣能幹的小夥子……
King: Why not? Such a fine young man like you…
小夥子：不，不，跟您說吧，我對我現在的壹切感到心滿意足了，其他毫無所求。
The youth: NO, no, I tell you. I'm content with just what I have and want nothing more.
國王：啊！我終於找到了壹個幸福的人！聽著小夥子，幫我壹下吧。
King: A happy man at last! Listen, young man. Do me a favor.
小夥子：只要能做到的，陛下，我壹定盡力效勞。
The youth: With all my heart, Majesty, if I can.
國王：等等。
King: Wait just a minute.
旁白：他再也按奈不住內心的喜悅，跑回去對他的隨從說。
Aside: said the king, who, unable to contain his joy any longer, ran to get his retinue.
國王：快，跟我來，我的兒子有救了，我的兒子有救了！
King: Come with me! My son is saved! My son is saved!
旁白：接著，他帶著他們來到小夥子身邊。
Aside: And he took them to the young man.
國王：我的好小夥子，不管妳要什麽，我都會給妳的，但是妳得給我，給我，妳……
King: My dear lad, I'll give you whatever you want! But give me…give me…"
小夥子：給您什麽啊，陛下？
The youth: What, Majesty?
國王：我的兒子快要死了，只有妳能救他，快過來。
King: My son is dying! Only you can save him. Come here!
旁白：國王壹把抓住小夥子，去解他的上衣扣子。突然，國王停住了，垂下了雙手，這個幸福的人沒有穿襯衣！
Aside: The king grabbed him and started unbuttoning the youth's jacket. All of a sudden he stopped, and his arms fell to his sides. The happy man wore no shirt.
