6. 二者的區別涉及到主謂壹致的問題，英語中有兩個相似的短語：a number of與the number of，它們修飾名詞作主語時，謂語的數是不壹樣的。
（1）a number of為量詞短語，表示“許多……”，中心詞是這個短語所修飾的復數名詞，所以作主語時，謂語動詞用復數形式。如：
A number of students of our school have read that magazine.
我們學校有很多學生都看過那本雜誌。
A number of wild animals have been found in the forest.
森林裏發現了很多野生動物。
（2）the number of表示“……的數量”，中心詞為number，指的是of後邊名詞的數量，數量是個抽象概念，因此謂語動詞用單數。如：
The number of students in our school has grown from 1,000 to more than 1,500.
我們學校學生的數量從1000名增加到1500多名。
The number of wild animals has become less and less in recent years.
最近幾年裏，野生動物的數量逐漸減少。
