意思是“代替……”、“而不……”，其主動用法如下：
1．
作為短語介詞，instead
of
後面常跟名詞、代詞和動名詞，偶爾也跟復合結構。
2．
Instead

後面還可跟形容詞、副詞、動詞、不定式、介詞短語和從句，這時他相當於連詞，但也有不少人認為他們是介詞。但是，對中學生來說，重要的不是他的詞性，而是他的用法。
